About Us

How We Got Started

Since it’s beginnings in 2013 when a few volunteers began raising money to plant public shade trees, Tree Northampton Inc. has truly exploded with hundreds of volunteers planting and caring for trees all around the city.  Dramatic growth began in earnest after 2015 when our city began, for the first time in decades, allocating money to purchase trees. Volunteers embraced the opportunity, planting more trees each year and in 2019 to great fan fare we planted the thousandth tree!  Our robust growth attracted attention from tree professionals throughout New England and Tree Northampton was recently recognized with the  Harry J. Banker Gold Leaf Award by the International Society of Arboriculture.  The award shone a light on our winning model of a private citizens group partnering with a municipal shade tree program.

We will need to plant 2,000 more public trees before we are “caught up” from the decades of not planting and plan to replace about one percent of our 10,000 tree canopy going forward plateauing at one hundred plantings per year.  Recently the Emerald Ash Borer arrived in Northampton and soon our 334 Ash trees will be decimated again increasing our calculations.

Caring for young public shade trees poses an even larger need for specialized volunteer engagement as thousands of new trees become established.  Volunteers begin training trees two years after planting, shaping them for success in their urban landscape, strengthening their structures and promoting their good health.  Tree Northampton is also developing new programs for working with residents promoting private back yard tree plantings and working with businesses and institutions building the city’s canopy.

OUR MISSION

Tree Northampton, Inc. is a community-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization devoted to promoting ecological stewardship of Northampton, MA through education, advocacy, and volunteer participation. In collaboration with the Northampton Tree Warden (Richard C. Parasiliti, Jr.) and the Northampton Public Shade Tree Commission, Tree Northampton volunteers support Northampton’s tree program by planting and caring for trees all around the city.  Tree Northampton also provides educational opportunities and assists residents and businesses with planting plans for increasing our city’s canopy.
